Northern Michigan's Chain of Lakes, cut in real wood

The Elk River Chain of Lakes links 14 lakes and rivers across Antrim and Kalkaska counties, about 55 miles of water that ends in Grand Traverse Bay at Elk Rapids. Its biggest lake, Torch Lake, runs about 19 miles and is known as the "Caribbean of the North" for its clear turquoise water. This map takes in the chain from Central Lake and the North Arm by Bellaire through Clam River and Alden down to Rapid City and Elk Rapids, with Grand Traverse Bay along the west edge.

How we make it

The land is layered maple, laser-cut along the shoreline and engraved with the towns, preserves and highways. Underneath, the water is hand-painted blue with the depth contours scored in, so the shoreline casts a real shadow. Then we frame it in 1/2" stained walnut. Every map is cut, painted and assembled by hand in our Newark, NY shop.
