A small, deep Cass County lake, cut in real wood

Hemlock Lake sits just outside Marcellus in southwest Michigan. It covers only about 60 acres, but the state's lake-contour survey charts it past 70 feet deep. This map shows the whole lake and the roads around it, from Hemlock Lake Campground Rd on the south shore to Robinway Drive and Taylor Drive on the east side.

How we make it

The land is layered maple, laser-cut along the shoreline and engraved with the roads around the shore. Underneath, the water is hand-painted blue with the lake's depth contours scored in, so the shoreline casts a real shadow. Then we frame it in 1/2" stained walnut. Every map is cut, painted and assembled by hand in our Newark, NY shop.
