Hilton Head Island and Calibogue Sound, cut in real wood

Hilton Head Island sits in Beaufort County at the southern tip of the South Carolina coast: about 12 miles long, roughly shoe-shaped, with 12 miles of Atlantic beachfront. This map takes in Broad Creek, Pinckney Island, Bluffton and Daufuskie Island across Calibogue Sound, with Fish Haul Beach Park and the airport on the north end and Coligny Beach Park and the Sea Pines Forest Preserve to the south.

How we make it

The land is layered maple, laser-cut along the shoreline and engraved with the towns, parks, beaches and US-278. Underneath, the water is hand-painted blue with the marsh creeks and offshore depth contours scored in, so the shoreline casts a real shadow. Then we frame it in 1/2" stained walnut. Every map is cut, painted and assembled by hand in our Newark, NY shop.
